Description

When Steven Grant, a mild-mannered gift-shop employee, becomes plagued with blackouts and memories of another life, he discovers he has dissociative identity disorder and shares a body with mercenary Marc Spector. As Steven/Marc’s enemies converge upon them, they must navigate their complex identities while thrust into a deadly mystery among the powerful gods of Egypt.

    Museum worker Steven Grant occasionally suffers from blackouts. After going to sleep one night, he wakes up in another country, and witnesses a cult meeting led by Arthur Harrow, who demands a scarab Steven unknowingly had in his possession. He escape and is nearly killed, but is unknowingly saved by a mysterious voice in his head. After waking up in his home and noticing several oddities, Grant realize that two days have passed since he went to sleep. Upon returning home from a mis-scheduled date, Steven finds a hidden phone and keycard in his apartment. He receives a call from the most frequent number in the phone's call log, and a woman named Layla answers, addressing him as Marc. The next day at work, Steven is confronted by Harrow, who reveals that he is a servant of the goddess Ammit. Later that night, Harrow summons an Anubis-associated jackal monster that attacks Steven at the museum. Just as Steven is cornered in the restroom, Steven's reflection in the mirror tells Steven to let him take control. Steven agrees and he transform into Moon Knight who then kill the jackal monster.

    Steven wake up back in his apartment the next morning. He then went to work, finding the museum egyptian exhibit in ruins from his battle with the jackal monster the night before. He tries to show the guard the security footage from the night but all they saw was him running from nothing. Steven were fired for seemingly damaging the museum, Steven uses the keycard to find a storage facility containing the scarab. Steven's "reflection" reveals that he is Marc Spector, another identity living in Steven's body, an American mercenary, and the current Avatar of the Egyptian moon god Khonshu. Marc tries to convince Steven to let him resume control of their body, but Grant refuses and flees. He is confronted by Layla El-Faouly, Marc's wife who was unaware of Steven's existence, before being arrested by police officers working for Harrow. Harrow reveals that he was Khonshu's previous Avatar until he chose to follow Ammit instead and that he seeks the scarab to find her tomb and resurrect her so that she can purge humanity of evil. Layla rescues Grant, but Harrow summons another jackal monster to pursue them. Steven manages to summon a magical suit similar to Marc's and fights the jackal, but is overpowered and eventually allows Marc to take control. Marc kills the jackal, but loses the scarab to Harrow. Khonshu angrily confronts Marc, who promises to find Ammit's tomb before Harrow does. Khonshu threatens to claim Layla as his next Avatar should Marc fail before sending him to Egypt.

    Harrow and his followers discover the location of Ammit's tomb. In Cairo, Mac and Steven both experience several unusual blackouts while tracking down a lead to Harrow's location. After they fail to obtain information from Harrow's followers, Khonshu causes a solar eclipse to call for a council of the Egyptian gods and their avatars, who summon Marc to a chamber inside the Great Pyramid of Giza. Khonshu and Marc attempt to inform the gods of Harrow's plan to free Ammit, but the latter successfully denies the accusation when summoned. The avatar of the Egyptian goddess Hathor, Yatzil, tells Marc to find the sarcophagus of a medjay who knew of the location of Ammit's tomb. He later encounters Layla, who takes him to meet with Anton Mogart, an acquaintance of Layla who owns the medjay's sarcophagus. However, the meeting goes awry when Harrow arrives and destroys the sarcophagus, forcing Mac, Steven and Layla to fight off Mogart's men and escape into the desert. Steven is able to assemble a set of fragments from the sarcophagus into an ancient star map, but the map is two thousand years out of date. Khonshu uses his powers to briefly turn back the night sky to resemble the map, allowing Steven and Layla to find the location of Ammit's tomb. However, Khonshu is then imprisoned by the other gods, leaving Steven's and Marc's body unconscious and powerless. Afterward, Egyptian God Selim bring Harrow back to the chamber of the Gods and show him the ushabti of Khonshu trapped inside, believing him to be too dangerous. Harrow then speak with Khonshu in private, telling him that his torment forged Harrow a man he is now, and his victory will because of Khonshu.

    Steven and Layla find a deserted campsite at the location of Ammit's tomb, which is a maze in the shape of the Eye of Horus. They discover that some of Harrow's men have been killed by undead Egyptian priests, who attack them. Layla defeats the priests but encounters Harrow, who claims that Marc was one of the mercenaries who murdered her archaeologist father, Abdallah El-Faouly. Steven and Marc find the tomb and discover that Ammit's last avatar was Alexander the Great, they retrieve Ammit's ushabti from inside Alexander's body. Layla angrily confronts Marc who reveals that his partner killed Layla's father and Marc himself before Khonshu revived him as his avatar. Harrow arrives and shoots Marc, who wakes up in a psychiatric hospital populated by people from his life. After escaping from Harrow, who appears as a therapist at the hospital, Marc finds Steven in a separate body trapped in a sarcophagus. They also see a second sarcophagus with someone else trapped inside before being greeted by a hippopotamus-headed figure.

    The hippopotamus-headed woman, who Steven identifies as the Egyptian goddess Taweret, explains to Marc and Steven that they are dead and that the "hospital" is actually inside a boat sailing through the Duat. She weighs their hearts on the Scales of Justice to determine whether they will be allowed to enter the Field of Reeds and advises them to help each other uncover hidden memories causing their imbalance. Steven see a memory of Marc's younger brother Randall drowning and Marc's mother Wendy blame him for it, while Marc reveals to Steven how he became Khonshu's avatar while on a mission with Raul Bushman. Marc and Steven convince Taweret to let them return to the living world to stop Harrow, and she steers the boat towards the Gates of Osiris. "Dr. Harrow" convinces Spector that he has to fully open up to Steven, and Marc reluctantly explains that he unknowingly created Steven as a result of their mother's abuse. Steven and Marc reconcile with each other, but their scales fail to balance, causing hostile spirits to attack them. While fending them off, Steven is consumed by the Duat. The scales are balanced, and Marc finds himself in the Field of Reeds.

    Layla receives a message from Taweret, telling her to find and release Khonshu so he can revive Marc. Harrow uses Ammit's power to slaughter the other Egyptian gods' avatars before releasing Ammit, who choose him to be her new avatar, while Layla finds Khonshu's ushabti and releases him. Layla refuses to become Khonshu's new avatar, so he confronts Ammit alone and is overpowered. Meanwhile, Marc refuse to stay in the Field of Reeds alone, and chooses to return to the Duat and be with Steven. Seeing this Osiries with Taweret's help, make their escape through the Gates of Osiris and awaken back in their body. Khonshu senses their return and bonds with them again, healing their body and restoring their powers as Moon Knight. Layla discovers that Ammit can be defeated if the gods' avatars bind Ammit into a mortal body of her avatar, so she temporarily bonds with Taweret. Harrow, Ammit, and their followers begin judging everyone in Cairo, until Marc, Steven, Layla and Khonshu arrive to engage them in battle. Harrow overpowers Marc and Steven, and almost kills them until they both black out and reawaken to find that they have somehow brutally defeated him and his followers. Marc and Layla are able to seal Ammit into Harrow's body, imprisoning her again. Khonshu urge Marc to execute Harrow and Ammit, but Marc refuse and order Khonshu to release him and Steven from their service. Afterwards, Marc and Steven find themselves in the imaginary "asylum" again, but reject it and choose to continue their new life together. Sometime after, a crippled Harrow is abducted from a psychiatric hospital and executed by Jake Lockley, Marc and Steven's third alter, who is still bonded with Khonshu.
